Accessing the Mortality Section

To access the Mortality section, select the Outcomes module located on the left side of the screen. Mortality is the second section from the top, click the upward facing arrow on the right side of the screen to expand the window. The Mortality section includes three visualizations related to inpatient mortality over time.

Mortality Rate and Volume

The Mortality Rate and Volume graph provides an analysis of mortality rate fluctuations over time by volume of deaths. By analyzing mortality rates over time and across various patient condition categories, this graph facilitates the collection of pre-intervention mortality baseline data and the tracking of performance trends post-intervention. Hovering over the graph will highlight a specific section of a bar graph and line that provides tooltip with the percentage and count for that timeframe.

Mortality Rate by Admit RI

Mortality Rate by Admit RI allows for a comparison of mortality rates across admitting RI groups, providing insights into how patient condition upon admission correlates with mortality outcomes. The graph provides a trend of the mortality rate for higher RI groups (potentially avoidable deaths). Hovering over the graph will highlight a specific section of a bar graph that provides a tooltip with the percentages for that section.

Deaths by Highest Warning

The deaths by Highest Warning graph depicts the highest warning that occured for patients that expired during their visit based on the discharge disposition. This presentation allows for an examination of mortality rates across different warning states, facilitating a detailed exploration of individual patient cases for deeper analysis. Hovering over the graph will highlight a specific section of a bar graph that provides a tooltip with the total count of deaths and count of the specific warning type.

Mortality Patient List

Below the three Mortality visualizations is the patient list, which includes the following patient information:

  • Visit number
  • Medical Record Number
  • Patient name
  • Admit date
  • Discharge date
  • Facility patient is located
  • Service line code
  • Discharge unit
  • Discharge unit type
  • Discharge disposition
  • Admit RI score
  • Minimum RI score
  • Maximum RI score
  • Exact length of stay
  • Calendar length of stay
  • Midnight length of stay
  • Admitting provider
  • Attending provider
  • Primary diagnosis
  • Unplanned transfer count
  • Bounce back count
  • Highest warning

This section displays a comprehensive list of patients and their data featured in the Mortality visualization. In the top left corner, users can search through this list, while also having the option to download it in Excel or CSV format on the top right side of the screen. The bottom left corner offers controls to adjust the number of patients shown per page, with choices of 10, 25, or 50. Additionally, navigation through the patient list is facilitated by front and back arrows located in the bottom right corner.

Patient RI Graph

Below the Patient List, the user will find a set of RI graphs corresponding to each patient. The number of graphs displayed is determined by the 'Items per page' setting selected in the patient list above.

Users can customize the display at the top of the RI graphs by selecting the Chart Title menu. The options available for customization include:

  • Visit number
  • Admission date
  • Medical record number
  • Patient name
  • Full location
  • Unit & room
  • Room number
  • Anonymous

Users can click on a patient’s graph to open it in full-screen mode for a larger view. Alternatively, hovering over a patient’s graph will provide a concise preview of the patient’s visit information.
